Richard learyod’s picture is made with the photographic process known as ‘Camera Obscura’. He created a room sized camera where the photographic paper is.
This gives us the perfect image that we see. It is simply composed and does not complicate us. It is striking and defined.
Learoyd has been inspired by the Dutch masters with that of light and composition. Learoyd does not specify a single artist that inspired him but that the collective as a whole aided his work. His use of shadow echo’s the great masters.
I like this piece as although it may appear simple you are captivated by the gaze of the young woman staring straight out at you. We are left with tantalising questions as to her importance to him personally and social standing.
